Ode to the 2600... By MCCVII (aka, The Raving Lunatic)

I trouble to recall my age
When my Atari was all the rage.
Before Nintendo and C64
My 2600 arrived at my door

It came at Christmas, oh what a shocker!
At 1.19 MHz, it wasn't much of a clocker.
The graphics were blocky and the audio, a joke
But it helped me to learn a peek from a poke.

I played all the games my allowance procured
Most games were exciting, others more absurd
We practiced and plotted to beat all the snares
We wondered why circles looked more like round squares

I loved the games the more I played
My friends and I were quick to trade
Our greedy friends, we teased and taunted
The offered "Combat" which no one wanted!

The selection of games rivaled that of Sony
Unfortunately it was the 80's and no one had money.
So we borrowed and traded and mowed lots of grass
By the way, why was Qix such a pain in the Ass?

I wore out my joystick from way too much play
The rubber would separate and the button decay.
The paddles were fun but they too had their flaws
Too easily stripped by our over-anxious paws!

We had classics like Frogger, Ms. Pac-Man, and Pitfall
And those less appealing like ET and Baseball.
Chopper Command, Pole Position, and Joust topped the charts.
Bluto chased Popeye as Olive dropped hearts.

Zaxxon was tough on either "A" or "B"
Flying sideways, at and angle is a pain when you can't see.
Yar, Wor, and Battlezone were simply the best
Can't think of the hours I spent on Swordquest

But the 2600 was topping the Hill
It was reaching its burnout as stars one day will
It shoes, neither 5200 nor 7200 could fill
The keyboards stuck and the game selection was ill!

The beast finally let out its final death roar
As Nintendo committed to ending the war.
The graphics sound of the NES were amazing
And the 2600 was sent out for grazing.

But 20 years later my friend's still around
My blocky Nintendo has long been in the ground!
Its lines are still classy, its merits undaunted
Those of us who own one are eager to flaunt it!

We break out our games when our friends come to town
I swear I'm still the best Yar's player around!
My PS2 gets more play. I'll not argue, but…
But in 25 years, it'll be "PS What?"

Poem submitted by a reader. Brilliant.

Astronomy Buffs, Check This...

Take a look at this guy's amateur digital photo of solar flares that earned him recognition from NASA. (I found this through Joy's weblog).

If you're down with astronomy, you are going to love this free software!

Celestia is a free real-time space simulation that lets you experience our universe in three dimensions. Unlike most planetarium software, Celestia doesn't confine you to the surface of the Earth. You can travel throughout the solar system, to any of over 100,000 stars, or even beyond the galaxy. All travel in Celestia is seamless; the exponential zoom feature lets you explore space across a huge range of scales, from galaxy clusters down to spacecraft only a few meters across. A 'point-and-goto' interface makes it simple to navigate through the universe to the object you want to visit.

(Windows 98/ME/2000/XP Linux OSX)  WARNING: Do not install it if you plan on getting any work done!

Something Occured To Me...

Why the heck would I want to sit around working on computers this weekend, when life is this good?!

Moron Club Accepting New Members

Anyone care to guess what all of these sites have in common?

The worst dimwit is this guy, who stole my writing and doesn't even credit me:

UPDATE: This post has generated a lot of interest. I've received numerous emails in addition to the comments that visitors have posted.

This post used to have a picture of a little girl sticking her tounge out, with a caption that read "you're a LOSER". I found the picture via Google Images and thought it the most appropriate image for this post. You can imagine my shock when I was contacted by the little girl's father! He has asked me to remove the image, and of course, I have done so. The irony and hipocracy here is obvious-- the fact is that I used a stolen image to decorate a post about people stealing my site template and personal writing. I would like to publicly appologize to the gentleman and acknowledge my own membership into the Moron Club.

I think what this experience has shown me is just how readily the internet encourages moronic behaviour. It is like a giant free-for-all, with everyone grabbing whatever they want and using it to thier own ends. I have also received numerous emails from the guy that used my writing on his site. He removed the writing immediatley, and in addition to offering several appologies, has offered to let me publicly humiliate him. I don't think that is necessary. It only highlights that even nice people will behave in ways online that they wouldn't consider in their daily lives.

I was shocked to see my writing on another guys site. I can only imagine what it was like for the dad who has now seen his daughter's photo on several sites in addition to this one. If anyone is interested, here are the instructions about how to remove all of a site's images, or just a few specific images, from Google's image cache.

When I get a chance I will answer some of the questions that this post has generated.

It seems that a large percentage of internet users have stolen material that they have found online, whether it be MP3's, movies, writing, images, etc. etc. Perhaps you might like to consider joining the Moron Club, possibly one of the fastest growing groups on the 'net today!

Bill Gates' Inbox

John Walkenbach (of J-Walk Blog fame) has been featured several times on this site. Here is his fabulous parody of Bill Gates' Inbox.

Dude! Like you should switch to Linux.

Oh and another thing. You remember the Star Wars Kid? Some people don't ever stop. I still think that the original video steals the cake, but the first remix seals the deal.

Wireless -Who Needs Cables?

Here is a consice explaination of 802.11 wireless networking standards from audiomidi.com:

Wireless networking for computers works in a similar way as cordless phones. The cradle, or phone holder, would be the Access Point (AP) and the computer would be the phone itself –allowing you to roam around and still transfer files or even stream audio to other computers and LAN’s (Local Area Networks). In fact, the most popular form of wireless, 802.11b, works on the same frequency of your cordless phone -2.4GHz.

Sadly, 802.11b only allows for an 11-15 MBPS transfer rate (not something you’d want to send audio files over, for example). However, 802.11g ups the ante with a theoretical transfer rate of 54 MBPS as well as being backward compatible with 802.11b.

One of the biggest problems facing 802.11b and g is the fact that it runs at 2.4GHz, just like your cordless phone and microwave which means interference can come into play. On the flip side, 802.11a utilizes the 5GHz band and is less susceptible to interference as well as supporting 54 MBPS, but unfortunately it is also much more directional and can have problems with its range. Additionally, 802.11a is not backwards compatible with the almost universal 811.2b.

Odds and Ends

Today has been a good day for sitting in the backyard, working on my sunburn, and catching up on my blogging.

Regular readers of this site know that my latest interest is in WiFi hotspots. In his recent newsletter, Mike Elgan offers his view on the uselessness of all of the pay-for-service hotspots that are appearing around the Silicone Valley—and beyond. Add the term “ubiquitous” to the terms “wireless access” and we’ve got a plan, man!

Reader Ian Weir was kind enough to send in a link to a Wired article on non-volatile RAM, which could very well be the Next Big Thing in the world of computing.

Help! I am looking for simple techniques for syncing Outlook on my laptop and desktop. The highest ideal here is to have two identical copies of the program: Inbox, folders, contacts, schedule—everything the same. I’ve looked around, but the best solution that I’ve come up with so far is to copy the entire .pst file from one computer to the other (a time-consuming solution to say the least). Any ideas?

Using DotComments With The New Blogger

I've been using DotComments for visitor comments on this site for some time. Also, I've recommended this system to anyone who has asked. With the new switch-over to the new Blogger interface, my comments still worked, but the number of comments stopped appearing on my blog.

It turns out that Blogger is using a new, longer string to identify archived posts, and this was confusing the JavaScript-based DotComments. The hack is very simple, and I found it via phil ringnalda dot com:

Locate the following string in your Blog template:

javascript:viewComments(<$BlogItemNumber$>)

Put quotes around <$BlogItemNumber$> so that it looks like the following:

javascript:viewComments('<$BlogItemNumber$>')

Thanks, Phil! I've dumbed-down his instructions for us non-programmers, but it works. Since the change-over, I've had people posting comments which, now that I've modifyed things, have disappeared. I know that they are still on the server, but (without going into a long explanation) I am confident that I can hack them back into the game.

One really nice improvement to the new Blogger is that it archives your posts automatically, so your permalinks always work without a fuss. That improvement alone is worth the trouble trying to struggle with a few glitches with third-party tools. Keep up the good work, Blogger. And give me a job!

UPDATE: All systems are restored. Bugs, be gone!

It Gets Even Better!

I am sitting in my Mom's backyard, editing my blog! I found a great deal on a Linksys 802.11b wireless router and PCMCIA card. They are so hyped about their new 802.11g products, they are practically giving all their older stuff away. My laptop is cruising the 'net with no cables. This is the way my existence is sopposed to be. I've got my tunes, a beer, and my blog. Ahhh. Life just keeps getting better and better.

It is times like these when I wish that I lived in California, where I understand there are many unregulated hotspots wide open for a weary traveller to enjoy. Come to think of it, I don't have any security on this network yet-- I'd better make sure there are no guys in the bushes with their laptops right now!

UPDATE-- I caught two guys (one with a laptop, one with a PDA) in the bushes across the road. I decided to play nice, and so I'm only charging them $5/ hr. for access. Now I am a mini-ISP! ;)

Live From Toronto

Well I'm in Toroto now to see the family, and I've finally gotten online but I have to say that this Sympatico DSL kind of sucks. I guess I've just never seen high speed internet that you have to sign into to use.

Before I left I picked up my new (to me) laptop. I bought it off of eBay, and man what a score it is! It is a Toshiba Satellite 5005 series, last year's model. I got it for $900 USD, or $1230 CDN. I worked on this same machine for a client a while ago, and it was the nicest laptop I've ever used. It has an amazing sound, and big, bright display and a really nice feel to it. Unfortunatley, this BlueTooth stuff is useless, so I have to look into a wireless PCMCIA card and an wireless interent gateway. I'm new to all this wireless stuff, but I'm sure there are a lot of people out there with great advice about what to look for. Ideally, I'd like to have something I can use easily in a variety of situations, whether cable internet, DSL, or for when I hack into thost T1 lines.

Oh and before you all start bugging me with SARS jokes because I'm in Toronto, let me assure you that there are far worse things here than SARS. There's the 401, Lake Ontario, and the memory of former-Premier Mike Harris. Also, there is a heat wave, smog, West Nile Virus and crack cocaine. What can I say, I'm a snob that is really glad to live in British Columbia.

Check out this flash-animated advertisment about the multimedia on my new rig.
